All about Deaf Culture
I always thought it was just...you know, stuff and habits the Deaf have cultivated in sync with the fact that they don't hear. For example, how flashing lights are used to call for attention and how way back before vibrating handphones came into play, they used to drink lots of water before they sleep as a way of a "biological alarm clock". Interesting stuff we hearing people take forgranted anyway.
So i thought that was basically it... stuff a bunch of similar people do. What i didn't get before, was that in Deaf culture... deafness was not a disability at all. It was "culture" in the true sense of the word.
Think of it as a language. (like French etc) The Deaf, for one, speak (hmmm or should i say communicate) in a different langauge...that is sign language and they do not speak verbal language (Eg. English)
Similarly, we speak English (or whatever), but we do NOT speak French (or whatever). And that does not mean i'm disabled. Well, you wouldn't consider me disabled right? So dumping me in France and say no one there understands English at all, would be like dumping a Deaf person, in a hearing world.
So because of that, they develop they're own culture which is non-dependent on sounds to go about everyday business. And their function, technically, is exactly that of any hearing person. They can do whatever you do. It's true... Sure, they probably will sing out of tune and can't use the phone (neither can i if the person was speaking French) but they still are physically and mentally able to do those things...not necessarily in the most efficient way.
Well, that's what i understand by Deaf culture at this point anyway. I hope to get more insight as i go along...
Catch phrase of the day:
1st, some introduction....this phrase is to be used when an annoyingly noisy person (from here on shall be referred to as "bugger") needs to be...made to understand that he's a bugger.
1. beat up said bugger, preferably make him land at least a few feet from origin.
2.walk towards him, point your index down at him (he should be on the floor) and say
3. "don't talk too much"
4. let absorp (some time may be needed for those with thicker skulls)
This "how to" lesson was brought to you by Kancho Wong.
(that's how buggers were handled by his sifu last time....haha)

Back in Uni
I did do quite badly as expected and i'm at a loss at how to improve myself.
So been trying to be hardworking this 1st 3 days. i clerked 2 patients and spoke to 2 more.
I'm doing a geriatrics posting for this 3 weeks. Whoever said minor postings were a walk in the park has gotta be kidding me.
There're TONS of presentations lined up for us... plus one case write-up.
Okay... let's see...
This friday : presentation of stroke case
Next Tuesday : Individual presentation (i'm doing something like "creating an elderly-friendly enviroment at home")
Next wednesday : Random case presentation
Thursday after next : Presentation of nutritional survey and planning a retirement village.
Oh, tmr we'll be visiting an old folks home =)
then we have to submit a report... seriously...what's with this module...so much work =(
Anyway, so far i'm really enjoying geriatrics (minus the assignments part) cos the lecturers are a really funny bunch. They lecture without notes or slides and successfully transition from one topic to another and cover everything seamlessly. Plus, they've got this sense of humour. I really like them geriatric lecturers.
Okay, going to sleep.

10 things If I pass...
When that happens and if I survive unscathed... i want to:
1. Get ready for CNY - need to shop for clothes and work on my psycho-killer-like hair
2. Call certain ppl and meet up
3. Make plans for Macau/HK =)
4. Go to the movies... there're usually movies i want to watch during exams.
5. Read sappy mindless love novels (strong emphasis on "mindless")
6. Practice my guitar and thicken the skin on my left fingertips and also get used to playing with fake nails
7. Work out and get my ideal fitness-freak body wahaha (yea rite...) but i DO wanna go more karate classes and get all the highscores on WiiFit =)
8. Join a 1st aid course
(ppl...don't expect a doctor on the scene to be of much help...1st aiders are more useful...not really either...make that an ambulance which gets there quickly... also unlikely to happen rite... ppl, you're all doomed... so do NOT collapse on a sidewalk) so saying, maybe i should take up a religious course instead.
9. Attend a boring talk ONCE. with obvious emphasis on "ONCE".
10. Jump off a tall building. (literally and figuratively speaking)
Sadly, neither of the above will happen if i fail my exam this coming tuesday. Ironically, i'll only get to jump off a tall building if i pass. Even though it'll probably be something i really want to do if i were to fail.
Man... i really want to pass. So badly i can taste it. It tastes a bit metallic.
i really should go study. COME ONNNNNNNNN...CONCENTRATEEEEEEE

i am...
seriously.
and it's not fun or funny
So i have the flu now... no biggie, it's not like i never had them before... but this timeeee
i have back aches.
Back aches that wake me up at 3 am and has me walking around.
back aches that has me popping Panadol in the middle of the night so that i can go back to sleep.
(btw, it appears my body's brand concious... generic panadol is a no-no but original Panadol is yay... unless i have already taken some generic PCM before that...or sumthing)
Back aches suck.
i also have all sorts of body aches...myalgia, arthralgia, orbital pain, pleurisy... no haemoptysis =)
this...has brought me closer to understanding my patients.
i must studyyyy.... if i pass... i'll get to go to HK =) if i fail... i'll forfeit about 400+ bucks. i want to gooooooo....

Happy New Year!!!
=)
another year of med school down... pretty soon, i'll be a doctor! hehe...whoever said medic was a long course didn't really hit it
ANyway, i'm allergic to paracetamol (ie panadol).
how ridiculous is that rite... to be allergic to the most fundamental OTC medication there is to mankind. everyone eats PCM.
When i eat it, i develop single/multiple urticaria around my eyes. It used to be single, and only around the left eye. But now, it's multiple and affecting the right eye too!! Is this what aging is all about? i tot allergies lessen with age. oh well...
So...since i can't take PCM, maybe i should go for aspirin?
I took out my guitar to strum a little a couple of days ago. I forgot how to play. and it hurt like hell too. oh and i think i need to start playing with fake nails. learn how to attach them and playyyy...
i can't concentrate. supposed to be studying. but my eyes can't open nicely(refer to para about PCM) and i'm not motivated/panicked enuff to get the ball rolling. kinda strange, usually 2 weeks prior to exam i'll freak out. gah!!!!

I find this...
And I love the thought of coming home to you
Even if I know we can't make it
Yes, I love the thought of giving hope to you
Just a little ray of light shining through
(Fairground , Simply Red)
Don't you think so? The groove of the music give me a nice feeling too... Thanks for the song!
2. ....year passed very quickly. we're all getting old =)
3. ...very funny and bothersome.
Got (un)lucky-drawed into having lunch with the vice-dean and the gang of ppl doing the accreditation for UPM's medical course. Since life has been kinda dull lately, i guess this should spice things up a bit. Hope i dun lose my uni's accreditation (gulp)

Cushing's at Tesco's
And for that, i was pretty excited. Imagine a lamb.
I banged on the piano yesterday. It was fun. Nearly forgot what it was like playing the piano. Though it was more of a memory exercise (i play from memory, can't read notes for nuts) revising all my usual boring ol songs. Will play the guitar soon i hope.
Been looping Jason Mraz's latest album over and over again. Just love love love his style of music. I don't get what he's saying though. Doesn't make much sense to me but love it anyway. i mean, what the hell does this mean? :
"So i guess what i'm a-saying is there aint' no better reason, to rid urself of vanity and just go with the season , it's what we aim to do... our name is our virtue..." (ahem, relation of last line?)
and this is from one of his most understandable songs "i'm yours".
sometimes, i want to be a doctor so much i can taste it (it tastes a little like cookies n cream ice-cream). Sometimes, i wonder if it's worth all the trouble when i can jolly well do something else likeee...say engineering? (my 2nd career choice heh). and sometimes, i just don't think i'm cut out for this, able to be a good doctor that is. This is when i try to convince myself that good doctors are made and not born (well, i hope so anyway). I need to pray.
I'm going to try to improve my memory. I'm bad with names, bad with faces, bad with remembering incidents, bad with remembering anything long term. All the memory geniuses say they relate stuff to other visual stuff (or sumthing). I think it takes quite a while to do that no? but i shall try.
So the 1st thing i'm going to attempt is this:
Dan (who is my cousin's husband, my poor victim) has fever and muscular ridigity after GA (see him ridigiting around?) and he's a fat guy and "truly lean". haha... so from this, i remember that malignant hyperthermia is treated with Dantrolene.
~_~
i'm so bad at this la.

Presenting...
About 2 weeks ago, after watching Ang Jolie's "Wanted" where the hero googles his name and comes up with nothing, i googled mine.
About a year back i did the same, and i got linked to a friend's blog who mentioned me in one of her posts.
but this time, a shockerrrr... there was a direct link from googling my full name to my hustle blog =0 and my blog does not even mention myself at all. heh i blame this on daniel for linking my full name with my blog
So blablabla... and voila!!! A new blog add is formed.
I initially wanted to put marble eggs, but i tot that it sounded a little insinuating and besides, i didn't really have any good reason to wanna insinuate things like that. Sooo cow it is...
Let me see if i can come up with a valid excuse for calling this a marble cow.
Marble isssss...
nevermind, the name just cropped up when it did. that's all.
As of now, i only told the bf of the change of blog name. and the bum forgot it and i'm not telling him again. It's not that hard to remember is it?
Anyway, life is a wee bit depressing now. I'm supposed to be studying the CVS system in a clinical way but i'm a little demotivated and just plain LAZY
i think i need my ears cleaned. i can't hear stuff very well.
All the murmurs and 3rd heart sounds and stuff... WTH... =(
and and and.. i can't feel an enlarged liver if a life depended on it... (which will be the case in future)
and and and... i can't answer questions posed by lecturers like how some other ppl can. This for some reason makes me sad...hahaha
Coming home always makes me happy tho. Eating yummy food makes me happy. Buying stuff makes me happy. Getting stuff makes me happy. most of all... it's the ppl at home that make me happy. I'm actually happy when i think about it.
I mean, is it even a valid reason to be sad if i can't tell the lecturer how we can clinically differentiate between a severe aortic stenosis and one that's not so severe? I say NOT!!
The answer btw, is a slow, rising pulse, a narrowed pulse pressure, and a heaving apex beat. Sheesh....
It is a valid reason to be sad that i cannot hear in the same patient, his two heart murmurs, one being pan-systolic and one being ejection systolic? i say NOT!! They sounded pretty much the same. had i not been informed beforehand, i wouldn't have been able to imagine one being longer than the other. yes, imagine. If you told me it was the same, it would've been to me. But it's not, cos you told me. Sheesh...
I need to study harder. period.
u know, i love medicine.

Hi!
2. mental prepareness
And we ate some "pho" (please pronounce as 'p-her', or something like that) Which is a nice noodly local dish. We ate at the Pho2000 which boasts a pic of Clinton when he was president eating there...
Then we saw the Notre Dame church...
and walked the streets of Saigon =)
The Cu Chi tunnel is a pretty interesting and amazing place. Here you can:
1. Pop out of the ground
2. Check out scary booby traps (all of em involve some spikes, either metal or bamboo) and let ur imagination run away with you
3. Fire your 1st few shots from an AK47 (btw, i missed the 'tiger' i wanted to hit =( aim lowerrrr ppl)
4. Run around underground ala mole-style (it's actually REALLY narrow, the tourist ones have been widened to allow passage of.. tourists, i could run around quite comfortably in those)
So the tunnels are the MUST see.
Vung Tau is more of a holiday beach resort area. THe view is spectacular, esp from the top of the Jesus statue hill (i don't know what it's called) Here you can see:Shopping is pretty fun there too... i bought some handbags, a pair of wooden slippers (they're actually quite comfy) and some tops.
OOhh, btw, i started the basic level Sign Language course at the YMCA =) It's really fun. Tell more in next post.
Time to sleep... must bring punctuality tmr.
(you should've seen this sky... )

Peek-a-BOO!
Well, i've had nothing useful to say here the past two months. Not that i do now... except that i wish to inflict this uselessness onto you. (Btw, Happy CNY)
I just felt the sudden urge to blog about something, because i'm now supposed to be busy studying for my Professional Exam 1 and useless activities are so much more interesting at times like these.
Oh, last thursday i had to go for this remedial class cos i failed this subject called "understanding disease epidemiology". Apparently, borderline fail. And the lecturer refused to tell us where we went wrong. Like, how can we improve then??? HOW??? < ))<
Anyway, i'll be voting for the 1st time (!!!!!!) in the upcoming general elections (which is actually less than 5 hours away) and i haven't really really decided who to vote for. Maybe i'll bring a coin into the polling booth just in case.
Yes, i HAVE to mention the GE like everyone else. tis the season... and i'm pretty sure anything close to politics won't ever crop up again after this.
So for PJU parliamentary seats we have BN vs DAP. I kinda like both candidates... and don't really want to see either of them lose. On the other hand, the DUN candidates... I like neither of them. i think they're both extremely unphotogenic =) They look a little...shifty? I can't even take the easy way out and vote for the leng chai one (as suggested by a certain friend..tsktsk)
By this time though, they ALL look like they popped right out of the obits section. green and pale.
So i can't decide because: there're issues. There's the party issue, the gender issue, the representation issue, the face issue, the '...' issue, the units issue and the issue that my medical degree is practically funded by the gov. It's ok. No one is supposed to understand what i'm saying.
ANyway, people are all getting hyped up about the denying BN 2/3 blablabla and all the news (that actually matters, the star is super boring lately) are online and ceramahs and interviews and all that. I've been reading up a bit (informed choice u know?) and i found that...
It's sad to be a BN candidate. Ur hands (mouths) are tied. You can't say what people want you to say and you know what they want you to say. You can't exactly do what people want you do to either. You can't state the obvious. You can't be straight forward. You have to defend your boss...dogmatically.
On the other hand, the opposition can say anything.
Which makes the BN candidates seem...weak. It's hard to gain the confidence of the voters with such lack of ammo.
Anyway, at least i've decided that our goverment has really bad PR skills. I wouldn't know the finer details, but stuff like BERSIH and HINDRAF were quite badly handled in a public manner. Forums and interviews on AlJazeera were nothing short of embarassing. They have this persistant quality of denial and donkey. Then again, maybe they learnt that from Donald Trump... never admit ur mistakes. He fires anyone who does on his show.
Speaking of shows, i just saw the 1st episode of Malaysian Dreamgirl. U know...the online modelling contest where KennySia is one of the judges. I like his blog. But on the show he reminds me a bit of an empty vessel. He makes unconstructive negative comments unlike the other dude. Yea, he's supposed to represent the layMAN but a little politeness and finesse wouldn't hurt (don't have to be THAT layman). But his blog is still a really good read. He blogs way better than he speaks on tv.
And i have successfully digressed from the GE.
Yea, i'm not going to say anything about politics (lest my uni finds out..something about revoking loans and stuffz) because i know next to nuts about it... and should shut up before i say something stew pit, irrelevant and monkey.
It's also time to sleep. Gnite.

2008
2007 passed pretty quickly for me...it was like "in a blink of an eye" kinda thing. I can still remember how i spent the eve of 2007 like it just happened... which was one of the best new-year eves ever, spent with a certain someone who became my dearest bf about a month after =) mmm...dreamy...
And also, another year of med school down!! yay me!
Yep, based on the above two itself, 2007 was obvIOUsly a great year. Lucky girl i am =)
However, 2007 was the year of emo for me. Totally emo-ed. It was a whole new experience of emo-ing for me...
Emo-trips that weren't reasonable to me after, but totally made sense then. Emo trips where i cried a lot too. More than i ever had in all the years since after babyhood put together. (exaggerating yea...) Revelation i tell u...
Now i know that i never knew what "emo" meant b4 this
Anyway, i'm on holiday now =)
Very happy =)
see how smiley i am? =)
Going to Sabah soon for a trip with uni-frens =)
Been reading lots of story books, a long-lost faved hobby of mine =)
Sleeping and waking up late =)
Eating all sorts of rubbish =)
Went rock climbing yesterday =)
So i must say : 2008 is starting off pretty well =D
Have a GREAT year everyone!

You can see that the elevator in Parkson, 1U, is quietly spreading a message from our government and PM. Who would've tot it...
Went to watch the Golden Compass today... TOo short la the movie, and the ending is too speedy. In fact, it was so speedy that, Garry and i missed the ending going to the toilet. RIDdiculousssss!
/cry
How could we have missed the ending??!?!?!?!
it was a so-so movie to watch la... but i enjoyed it anyway.
Ending...

And then rite, we went to join this queue in front of the Big Apple (i think la) doughnut shop. I like that white one with brown lines (got peanut butter wan) mmmMMmm... that white one in the upperleft corner is also good, if you like vanilla (like me)

The other day, i went to google for a cute animal picture. and i got this... someone photoshopped up a kibby. Supposedly a cross between a kitten and a bunny... haha quite cute hor. then dunno who told me it looked like a hamster.

haha oops, side way pic. TJL in action, man!!! and that's Cat, whom TJL's life depends on.

Oops again.

Moo...

Illusion-of-truth effect
Even if we believed it false at 1st, the next time you hear it, u mite think it's true =O
Do you know what this means? Warning: It means i can start planting strange but false ideas in ur heads by mentioning it a couple of times here and verbally. (omg!! application finally!)
Which means rite, the brain is a funny thing which isn't all that more reliable than the supposed 'heart'. oh well...
Went to the awesomest place today. "Loji rawatan kumbahan Indah Water Konsortium in Putrajaya"
Here is the 'shit' water that comes from ur toilet and kitchen and stuff.
Basically, they bubble air tru it to break up the shit particles and to "empower" the bacteria to digest the biological crap in it.
THen the clear effluent will flow out and into the riverssssss...
Btw, in singapore, the effluent is made into drinking water. Recycle...that's wat u do
This whole week, we have a module called "Services, client and community" which means we go around visit places apparently for educational purposes.
Yesterday went to NIOSH (national institute of occupational safety and health), quite boring la that one.
Tmr will go see a chiropractor. I wiki-ed it and discovered that it's treatment is based on spinal subluxation (!!!@@??!?@) Tho now they call it, spinal modification or adjustment =)
Hope it'll be interesting.

Happy Deepavali!!
It's the Festival of Lights ppl, so feel...light hearted. Even if you've got a ton of things to think about =P Btw, i really like those coloured rice art thing they make on the floor... does anyone know what it's actually called?

See that picture up there? I have no idea why they decided to put a dustbin in the middle of nowhere, seemingly to honour the flags that nobody does...
Speaking of my uni, there was this guy who participated in the student elections whose name is Thin Fatt Shen.
Nah, i'm not commenting on this... i wish he was in my class tho... imagine the oppurtunities *dazed*
Anyway, lately, we've been having lots and lots of practical sessions in the ADH (anatomical disection hall) which is actually equated to "compulsory social time" or "scheduled chit-chat session" simply cos the sessions are 3 hours long and by half time, we're all bored of staring and poking at cadavers... (how callous of us)

See how bored we are? (btw, i always felt that pic up there is hilarious)
Because i know that you've been wondering what a sectioned skull/brain looks like, below is a nice pic of exactly that... ur welcome
And this is what brains look like in cut-up pieces... FYI, that is called a "brain knife". Specially used for sectioning brains... hmmmmm... (calvin, you didn't hear that from me)
And here is me, "YT HION" (pronounced yit-hion, according so some ppl), under attack by extremely treacherous and crawly skeleton-of-upper-limbs.

Yes ppl, you can start worrying about the future of the practice of medicine...

Uh oh
Compassion has never been one of my better points, but now, it would seem that it's not even part of the point chart.
With the lack of compassion, i've always kinda relied on empathy to help me work up some form of compassion, but now, it would seem that even that, is getting faulty.
So...how now brown cow?
Well, it could be a phase. In which case, i'll just shut my trap and sit it out. (this sounds a bit like denial, no?)
Or, and this i strongly suspect, this is due to ignorance. Empty vessel. Very noisy. Very useless. In this case, i need to read more newspaper. (but looks like there're just inhumane reports in there) Should read more reader's digest i guess.
FOr now, i'll just try to keep an open mind, try to un-flypaperize it and sleep on it....

I...
I think rite...it's due to CNS. The lecturer keeps telling me stuff and it just accumulates in the "stuff-i-don't-understand-but-must-know" folder.
Sienzzzzz.
I've been reading about those organ donation articles and sometimes, they aren't very well expressed.
There was one article which made it seem as though those who died waiting for an organ transplant died because the society don't donate organs (not enough anyway)
Then in another article, someone said that malaysia, being a country with one of the highest accident rates, should have many organs that can be donated (or something like that). Well, that just sounds so wrong.
On monday, my lecturer said something that hit it.
She said, "not so good la, they're waiting for someone to die".
Which is true and sad. Cos u'd realise that the donor would most unlikely be someone who'd passed on due to natural causes like old age.
Someone has to die in the end. and eventually also everyone, for that matter.
On a totally different note,
for the last assessment, i managed a 92%, but the highest was 95%. So i'm depressed... (i'm really just kidding)
Speaking of which, Sem 2 finals... got a B A A.
Which means, i got a B for the paper i thought i'd fail. Looks like they lowered the passing mark, cos only two ppl failed that paper.
I doubt that only two ppl got less than 50%. It was crappily difficult.
Something funny happened after that. They got the top 7 ppl together for some sort of meeting with a vice dean. (I happened to be in that, thank you very much) and were asked "why do you think that the other students aren't doing as well as you?"
Which can be dumbly rephrased into "why aren't the other 111 ppl the top 7?"
...
also...like we know la.
I can hardly wait for the holidays...
it's sad that UPM medic student's only start their holiday on friday. when everyone else is already off like..NOW.
Oh yea, let me mention that i've finally gotten an MP4 player. The bf gave it to me, thanks dear!
So rite, i can now "tune in and tune out" in class. =P (heh heh, once again, thanks dear!)
but still sleep le.
good nite!

Hi!
It is deemed lame and pointless. (Big Leg et al.,Brian's Brain, Last edition, 2007)
Anyway, since i've already started, i mite as well mention that :
1. Medic Nite's over and it was okay. I've decided that MNs are a total waste of money and effort. Pointless stuff.
2. I'm bloated. Just went for a steamboat =).. I love steamboats.
3. I've been on a spending spree these two weeks. Jeans, tops, bag, famous amos. (I love the cookies there la *hint*)
4. I been one sleepy creature lately. "I nap...anytime, anywhere" (my motto for now)
I can now (if desperate enuff) fall asleep in class while crunching on a sweet.
5. I've still got two false lashes on my left eye. They refuse to fall off! Had some lash extensions done about 1 and half months ago... cool u know. Next, i think i'll have them permed. and if i have any left when i'm done, i'll stick to mascara.
6. steamyx is really slow. (betcha already know that one)
7. I sing for the rain.
8. I've no assessments for the next 4 weeks of my life (OMG!!!!) but after that, they're going to hit us with two per week back to back. (OMG!!!!!!)
9. In UPM, there're more girls than guys. means rite, girls are smarter. wahahaha.
10. I'm lame and pointless.
To prove it, here's an assignment:
If you like me, comment and say "pink".
If you hate me, comment and say "brown"
If you're indifferent, comment and say "pinkish brown"
If i like you, add the word "heart"
If i hate you, add the word "poo"
If i'm indifferent to you, add the word "hearty poo"or other way.
If you don't know anything, say "i don't know anything /la"
Haih... i'm seriously SS.
Sunday, July 29, 2007
Uh huh,
Pretty busy in uni nowadays, was put in charge of the performances for the upcoming (looming) 10th Medical Dinner of UPM. So have been attending dance practices till 12 am every nite.
and now i have to meet the vice dean cos apparently either/or/and:
1. the modern dance last year was too ...'modern' for the VIPs liking.
2. the modern dance was deemed inappropriate for a formal dinner.
No worries at all. I have always enjoyed meeting vice deans. They're fun to chat with. Esp about modern dances. For formal dinners.
I seriously need to drag my butt up to study. Test on monday (endo) and on wednesday (repro).
Um...wat else... i still sleep in class. Speaking of which, i think i may have a mild case of hypothyroidism. I sleep in class a LOT and have cold intolerence. i'm prob gaining weight as well.
My proof that i'm doing endocrine this sem.
A week back, i think my guardian angel either took a break, or an MC or somthing cos i kept injuring myself.
Slipped down the stairs, bruising myself all over the place, banging my head on fire extinguishers. I was concerned u know... but i think the angel's back on the job. I hope.
YES!!!i got a router for use in uni. therefore, i shall be reconnected to the outside world pretty soon.
Isn't he a cutie? I can officially be addressed as Auntie Yuen now. hmmm...ugh.
But Sean here is so cuteeeee... only a few hours old in the pic i think. He's got super a lot of hair for a neonate/newborn/babybaby and weighs 7 pounds!! He's a big guy for sure. Took him 3 hours to get out here =)
I want to see baby Sean!! (btw, the kid's in Canada)
